Top Chef Brian Malarkey Talks About Top Chef
By: Groshan Fabiola

During the third season of the Bravo network's competitive reality television series Top Chef, the competition was often fast-paced and intense, but it rarely brought down contestant Brian Malarkey's buoyant demeanor. He constantly maintained a good-natured attitude, which complimented his expert focus on seafood, and secured him a spot in the top four finalists. Although he didn't come out the penultimate winner of the competition, he still garnered for himself a fair amount of praise and respect for his playing style all throughout. In a subsequent interview, Malarkey openly discussed about how he came to be on the show, what he thought of his fellow competitors, and the chances of him appearing on another reality series soon.

Malarkey recalled how he didn't choose to audition at first, and how a scout had been sent instead by the producers to San Diego . Initially, he was supposed to have a spot on the second season, but it was decided that he wasn't quite what they were seeking out at the time. Instead they selected Frank Terzoli, also known as "Frankie the Bull," a native of San Diego . Later on, Malarkey was called up again by the show's staff for a chance to appear on the following third season. After several interview sessions, he was in.

He does openly confess, however, that he had his own fair share of hubris. In his mind, he thought he could triumph over any challenger that he would go up against. Malarkey gave his impressions of Hung Hyunh, saying that he had a young and immature soul. Malarkey was especially critical of Hyunh's seeming refusal to assist Chris Jacobsen during the airport cooking challenge. However, off-camera and outside of an intensely competitive setting, Malarkey had more respect for Hyunh and admitted that he was a fairly decent enough person.
